Instacart’s CEO personally shopped its first orders.
Apoorva Mehta, a former Amazon supply-chain engineer, had failed at roughly 20 startups before Instacart in 2012, and he shopped and delivered its early orders himself. He had missed Y Combinator’s deadline by months, and got in anyway by using his own app to send one of its partners, Garry Tan, a six-pack of beer.
