Grammarly’s founders started out selling colleges software that catches student cheating.
Max Lytvyn and Alex Shevchenko built a plagiarism detector, SafeAssignment, and Blackboard bought it in 2007 to give its colleges free as SafeAssign. Their next service, called EssayRater before it became Grammarly, told students to “be one step ahead of plagiarism detectors like Turnitin.”
