Goyard’s famous dots recall the firewood its family once floated down rivers to Paris.
Edmond Goyard designed the canvas in 1892. His family came from Clamecy in Burgundy, where the men had been log drivers, guiding firewood from the forests of the Morvan to Paris by river. The piled dots form three chevrons in the shape of a Y, the middle letter of the name, and the cloth itself came from the coated linen and cotton the log drivers cut their work smocks from.
