GoFundMe’s buyers found it when one of them was asked to donate on Facebook.
Late in 2014 a venture capitalist, John Locke of Accel, was invited to give to a GoFundMe scholarship fund for a friend’s brother. The founders, who had never taken outside money, took more than four months to agree to meet him. In 2015 they sold Accel and its partners a majority stake, for at least $300 million.
