Gatorade began on a football field.
In 1965, University of Florida researchers built a drink to replace the fluids and salts their football players sweated out, and named it for the team, the Gators. In 1967 Robert Cade’s group offered to sell it outright to Stokely-Van Camp for $1 million. The company refused and paid five cents a gallon instead. That nickel has since paid the inventors over $1 billion.
