Gap was named after a generational divide.
Donald and Doris Fisher opened the first Gap in San Francisco in 1969, and Doris coined the name from the “generation gap” dividing Boomers from their parents. Don stocked jeans in every waist and length because no department store carried Levi’s in his own 31-inch inseam.
