French’s, the mustard maker, made its biggest profits for years from birdseed.
George French loved birds, and the birdseed line he built from the 1920s made more money than the mustard for years. In the Depression French’s bred canaries overseas, and when German canaries ran short after the war it opened a bird factory in Churchville, New York. It also sold dog biscuits shaped like postmen, called People Crackers.
