Formula One’s name has nothing to do with speed.
The “formula” is the literal rulebook, the set of technical regulations, first written in 1946, that every car must conform to. The “One” is not a sequence but a rank, placing the premier formula above the cheaper Formula 2 and Formula 3 classes.
