Ferrero Rocher is named after the Lourdes grotto where Bernadette said she saw Mary.
Rocher is French for rock. Michele Ferrero, a devout Catholic who went to Lourdes every year on pilgrimage, named his praline of 1982 after the Rocher de Massabielle, the rock grotto of Bernadette’s visions. The chocolate’s craggy, hazelnut-pocked surface is said to have been inspired by the rock itself.
