Duracell coats its coin batteries in the world’s bitterest substance.
A swallowed coin cell does not choke a child. Saliva closes the circuit, and the current burns through the esophagus in about two hours. Reese Hamsmith, 17 months old, swallowed one in October 2020 and died that year. That same month, Duracell began coating its coin cells in denatonium benzoate, so that toddlers gag and spit them out.
