Disney’s first animated star was a rabbit Walt didn’t own.
In February 1928, distributor Charles Mintz revealed that Universal held the rights to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and that he had quietly signed most of Disney’s animators to his own studio. Walt quit, and by his own account he dreamed up the mouse that became Mickey on the long train ride back from New York.
