Diptyque’s scented candles were its candlemaker’s idea, in a shop selling fabric.
In 1961 a painter who had worked at Bletchley Park, a stage designer and a textile designer opened a shop on Paris’s Boulevard Saint-Germain to sell their own fabrics. In 1963 their candlemaker suggested scented candles, rare at the time. The fabrics never caught on. The candles became the business, and in 2024 the company’s sales came to €227 million.
