DHL began by flying ships’ paperwork to Hawaii as airline luggage.
In 1969 a ship’s cargo could wait in port for days until its papers arrived by mail. Adrian Dalsey and Larry Hillblom, a Berkeley law student, flew the bills of lading ahead so customs could clear the goods before the ship docked. Robert Lynn, the L in DHL, quit almost at once, sure the business would never succeed.
