Danone began in 1919 as a medicine sold in Barcelona’s pharmacies.
Yogurt was so little known in Western Europe that Isaac Carasso, a merchant from Salonica, sold his by prescription through pharmacies, as a remedy for children’s intestinal troubles. He named it Danon, the Catalan nickname of his son Daniel, and added an e because the Spanish authorities would not register the name without one.
