Dairy Queen began as a one-day taste test.
In 1938, Illinois ice-cream maker J.F. McCullough was sure his new soft-serve tasted best straight from the machine, before freezing firmed it up. To find out if anyone agreed, he ran a single 10-cent “all you can eat” trial at a friend’s store in Kankakee. Customers bought about 1,600 servings in two hours.
