Comme des Garçons was founded by a woman who cannot sew.
Rei Kawakubo studied aesthetics, not fashion, then worked in a textile maker’s advertising department. As a freelance stylist she could not find the clothes she wanted, so she designed her own, and by 1969 she was selling her designs. She cannot cut a pattern and does not sketch. Her pattern cutters work from a scribble, a crumpled piece of paper or a phrase like “inside-out pillowcase.”
