Columbia Sportswear began with a family that fled Nazi Germany.
Paul Lamfrom fled Germany in 1937 for Portland, Oregon, and bought a struggling hat distributor because it was available. When it neared bankruptcy in the 1970s, his daughter Gert Boyle got one buyout offer — $1,400. She threw the man out — “for that, I’d run it into the ground myself.”
