Coca-Cola once contained cocaine.
The original 1886 formula by Atlanta pharmacist John Pemberton included extracts from coca leaves, the source of cocaine, and kola nuts. First sold as a medicinal tonic, it had the cocaine quietly removed around 1903. The name stayed.
