Cash App began as an email you copied to cash@square.com.
In October 2013 Square opened Square Cash to the public, with no account to set up. You gave Square a debit card number once, then paid a friend by email, the amount in the subject line and cash@square.com in the CC field. In 2025, Cash App users moved $316 billion into their accounts, from paychecks, bank transfers and one another.
