BYD overtook Tesla to become the world’s biggest maker of electric vehicles.
In 1995 a chemist named Wang Chuanfu started a battery company in Shenzhen that soon made rechargeable cells for the mobile phones of Motorola and Panasonic. It built no car until 2003, when it bought a struggling state carmaker. BYD’s letters meant nothing until 2008, when it coined Build Your Dreams for a US auto show.
