Bumble was built on women messaging first, and in 2026 it let men go first.
Whitney Wolfe Herd thought of the rule in 2014. Women would send the first message, or the match would vanish after 24 hours, “like in Cinderella.” The rule built a company worth $8.3 billion when it went public. In August 2026 Bumble dropped it, saying nearly two-thirds of women it surveyed preferred men to write first.
