Best Buy is named for a sale held after a tornado wrecked its best store.
In June 1981 a tornado sheared the roof off Sound of Music’s Roseville store, its largest and most profitable, destroying the showroom and leaving the storeroom intact. Richard Schulze put the stock out in the parking lot, spent what was left of his marketing budget on a “Tornado Sale” promising “best buys” on everything, and took more in four days than in a typical month. In 1983 the chain became Best Buy.
