Two childhood friends scrapped a lox-and-bagel delivery plan, split a $5 Penn State correspondence course in ice-cream making — $2.50 of training each — and opened in a renovated Burlington gas station in 1978. The trademark chunks were an accident too. Ben Cohen can barely smell, so he judged every batch by feel, demanding bigger and bigger pieces.
