Bank of America is really NationsBank, which bought BankAmerica in 1998 and took its name.
Hugh McColl’s NationsBank of Charlotte made the 1998 purchase, then the largest bank deal in history. The merged bank kept NationsBank’s Charlotte headquarters and stock price history. Its charter, though, is the one granted in 1927 to A. P. Giannini’s Bank of Italy, which renamed itself Bank of America in 1930.
