Bacardi’s bat began as the bats its founder’s wife took for a sign of fortune.
When Facundo Bacardí Massó bought a small distillery in Santiago de Cuba in 1862, his wife, Amalia, took the bats for a sign of good health, family unity and fortune. Many Cubans could not read, so customers asked for el ron del murciélago, the rum of the bat.
