AWS began as Amazon’s own infrastructure problem.
By the early 2000s, Amazon had built data systems to run its retail operations, and its engineers realized the platform suited any software team. In 2006 Amazon began renting it to outside developers. In 2025 that side business made more operating profit than all of Amazon’s stores combined.
