AT&T was bought by the smallest of the phone companies it had to give away.
In 1984 an antitrust settlement split the Bell System into seven regional companies, and Southwestern Bell was the smallest. It bought two of its siblings, then in 2005 bought its old parent for $16 billion and took the AT&T name and the “T” ticker.
