Anthropic was built by eight people who quit the same employer in one winter.
The employer was OpenAI. In January 2021 the eight launched Anthropic, led by a brother and sister, Dario and Daniela Amodei, who had both been vice presidents there. Five years on, the breakaway that sells itself as the careful one is valued above the company it left, at roughly $965 billion.
