Aldi is split between two halves of one German family.
Karl and Theo Albrecht built a German discount empire, then split it in 1961, reportedly after falling out over whether to sell cigarettes. The break created Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd. Today Aldi Süd runs the Aldi stores Americans know, while the family behind Aldi Nord quietly owns a rival of those stores, Trader Joe’s.
