Advil is ibuprofen, and its inventor tested it on himself before a speech.
The drug was discovered in 1961 by Stewart Adams and his team at Boots, the British pharmacy chain, in Nottingham. In Moscow in 1971, hungover before a conference talk, Adams took a dose of his own drug and it worked. Boots owned the patent, so he earned no royalties. He even paid the £1 filing fee himself and never claimed it back.
