Xiaomi is named after a grain of millet.
Lei Jun founded the company in 2010, giving it the Mandarin word for the grain. For its whole first year, the future phone giant sold no phone at all. Its only product was MIUI, a free custom version of Android that enthusiasts flashed onto other companies’ handsets.
