Welch’s exists because a dentist who opposed alcohol couldn’t stomach the communion wine.
In 1869 Thomas Welch, the dentist, pressed Concord grapes at his home in Vineland, New Jersey, and used Louis Pasteur’s new heat trick to kill the yeast before it fermented. He sold the bottles to churches for communion, under a label that still called it wine — “Dr. Welch’s Unfermented Wine.”
