Waymo began as a pizza-delivery stunt that Google would not put its name on.
In 2008 a Discovery Channel show asked Google engineer Anthony Levandowski for a driverless car to deliver a pizza. Google feared a crash with its name on it, so he built the Prius through his own company, and police escorted it across the Bay Bridge. Within months Google started its own project, now valued at $126 billion.
