Vogue started as a weekly gazette for the 400 people said to fit one ballroom.
Arthur Baldwin Turnure launched it in 1892 as a 10-cent weekly for New York’s “Four Hundred.” The ballroom was Mrs. Astor’s. Condé Nast bought the fading sheet in 1909 at 14,000 readers and rebuilt it into fashion’s bible — whose printers called about Anna Wintour’s first cover, $50 jeans under couture, asking if it was a mistake.
