VLC’s traffic cone is a real one, hoarded by French engineering students.
École Centrale Paris’s network association kept roughly 200 cones for a floor of 24 people. Around 1999, carrying one back from a dinner, students used it as a megaphone to shout the name of the classmate hogging the campus link. By the project’s telling, a developer finished VLC’s Linux video output and marked his code with a cone to prove he got there first.
