Versace’s metal-mesh dresses began with the chainmail gloves worn in slaughterhouses.
In 1982 Gianni Versace introduced Oroton, a super-light metal mesh he draped across the body, and showed it at the Paris Opera. The mesh was aluminum, like the butchers’ chainmail gloves that gave him the idea. On a woman it looked like mercury slowly dripping over her curves.
