Vans were adopted by skateboarders because the sole was stickier.
Paul Van Doren and three partners opened a shoe store in Anaheim in 1966, selling shoes they made on-site. The thick rubber soles, built for grip, happened to grip a skateboard deck. Skaters found the shoe in the early 1970s.
