UPS began in a tiny basement office under a Seattle saloon.
In 1907 two teenagers, Jim Casey and Claude Ryan, borrowed $100 and opened the American Messenger Company in that basement, the tenth such outfit in Seattle. An old lunch counter was their desk, and their bed. Their boys ran messages across town on foot and by bicycle. Today UPS is worth about $84 billion.
