Tinder was almost named Matchbox, before its parent’s Match.com got in the way.
Built at a 2012 Hatch Labs hackathon, the prototype was named Matchbox. Parent company IAC already owned Match.com, and the sister brand sat too close for comfort. Matchbox had to go, so the team reached for a thesaurus and landed on Tinder, the word for the dry scraps that start a fire.
