Tide exists because one P&G chemist kept working on a project his bosses had shelved.
By the end of the 1930s P&G had all but given up on Project X, its search for a heavy-duty synthetic detergent. David Byerly kept at it quietly, even after he was ordered to stop. His formula, sold as Tide from 1946, has been America’s best-selling detergent every year since the early 1950s.
