Texas Instruments hunted oil before it made the chip and the calculator.
The company began in 1930 Dallas as Geophysical Service, a crew that thumped sound waves into the ground and read the echoes to map buried petroleum for oil men. Wartime taught it that the same gear could find submarines. In 1951 it took the name Texas Instruments, and the oil-mapping outfit became a subsidiary of the company it had created.
