Building the first Roadster, which shipped in 2008, Elon Musk and the Tesla founders used lithium-ion cells — the same ones in laptops. No production car had run on laptop cells, and the battery makers Tesla approached were alarmed by the idea. The car that changed how the industry saw EVs ran on 6,831 laptop batteries.
