Sriracha’s maker, Huy Fong, is named after a boat.
David Tran fled Vietnam in 1978 aboard a Taiwanese freighter named the Huey Fong. In Los Angeles he made his chili sauce by hand in a bucket and sold it from a van, taking $2,300 his first month. He never advertised and never trademarked the name.
