Sheffield F.C. is the world’s oldest football club, born from an un-football problem.
Two cricketers, Nathaniel Creswick and William Prest, founded it in 1857 to keep teammates fit through winter. Their rulebook, the Sheffield Rules, was football’s first club-published code, and Sheffield’s game gave football the corner kick. Today the club plays in England’s ninth tier, its FIFA Order of Merit shared with only one other club, Real Madrid.
