Shake Shack began as a hot dog cart.
In 2001, restaurateur Danny Meyer set up a hot dog cart in Madison Square Park to support a public art installation. The cart did so well it became permanent, then a building, then a chain. Its 2015 IPO valued the hot dog stand near $1.6 billion.
