Sequoia Capital sold its Apple stake before the IPO, for tax reasons.
Don Valentine had put $150,000 into Apple’s first venture round in January 1978, beside Venrock and Arthur Rock. In the summer of 1979 Sequoia sold the stake for about $6 million, to pay out cash to its own investors and for tax reasons, before Apple ever went public.
