Sega got its start amusing American troops.
American founders stocked US bases in Hawaii from 1940, and after World War II shipped slot machines to off-duty US troops stationed in Japan. The name is short for SErvice GAmes. The full circle came in 2004, when pachislot-machine maker Sammy bought control of Sega in a stock swap that valued the Sonic studio near $1.45 billion.
