Ray-Ban was designed for US Army Air Corps pilots.
Bausch & Lomb developed green anti-glare lenses at the military’s request, to cut high-altitude glare, and had a prototype by 1936. The teardrop lens maximized eye coverage in a cockpit. In 1937 the company put the glasses on sale to the public as Ray-Ban, for banning the sun’s rays.
