Pyrex began when a scientist’s wife baked a cake in railroad-lantern glass.
In 1914, Bessie Littleton baked a cake in a cut-down battery jar of Nonex, Corning’s rugged railroad-lantern glass. It worked, and by 1915 the industrial glass was ovenware. That cheap, rugged glass now draws collectors — a rare 1959 “Lucky in Love” Pyrex casserole sold at a Goodwill auction for $5,994.
