Puma was founded in 1948 by one brother who walked out of the family workshop.
He was Rudolf Dassler, and that Herzogenaurach shop had made Jesse Owens’ 1936 Olympic spikes back when he ran it with his brother Adi. A poisonous falling-out ended everything. Adi kept the original factory and turned it into Adidas. The two firms split the town so cleanly that neighbors checked each other’s shoes before saying hello.
